First ever GPL related lawsuit settlement

First every GPL related settlement was reached between Monsoon Multimedia and the plaintiff (two principle developers of BusyBox) represented by Software Freedom Law Center (SFLC). The plaintiff filed a lawsuit against Monsson Multimedia in mid-September. BusyBox is licensed under GPL2.

It looks like the violation was found by a user who asked some questions in the Moonsoon Multimedia's forums and a representative reportedly admitted that their product was using Linux.

This begins to show the importance of GPL. One has to clearly understand that even though the source code is open (in a GPLed software distribution) for the public to modify and distribute, it is important that the modified version be shared with the community. If it is not shared, it is a violation of GPL. By reaching the settlement, the SFLC has made it clear that any other GPL violations will be tackled in a similar fashion.

Many companies are also violating BusyBox license and the developers have created a wall of shame on their website. I guess the community should help all the GPLed software to identify the wall of shammers for the respective software.
